Editorial: Violent media is raising the next generation

Technology is quickly becoming the answer to every question. What's the latest news? Pull up a website. How do I solve this math problem? Search is up online. I need to distract the kids. What do I do? Hand them a video game controller. People are being introduced to the internet at increasingly younger ages, bringing with it exposure to all sorts of topics, including violence.

Be it through video games, movies, or TV shows, violent media has a big influence on developing minds. Research shows that kids mimic and learn from their surroundings; when they're consistently exposed to violence and aggression, they learn that these things are okay. In this editorial, I look into the impacts of exposure to violent media and argue that parents need to make sure that their kids are still learning good habits and behaviors.

Editorial: Tough love coaching styles do not justify verbal abuse

As a multi-sport athlete, I've had my fair share of bad coaches over the years. In my experience, coaches can take a variety of approaches to helping players improve. The one thing that stood out to me was that there is a fine line between constructive criticism and harmful insults.

In this editorial, I explore the importance of coaching styles in player development. I argue that tough love works to an extent, but we have to be careful not to cross that line. Going too far can put too much pressure on athletes, in some cases causing them to turn to other means of improving, such as steroid use.
