What is the role of a journalist? To gather and present factual information to the public. As a staff writer for Scot Scoop, I've reported on events and developments across the community, from school assemblies to political protests.

No Kings Day: Millions protest against Trump policies
In October 2025, Americans nationwide erupted in protest against President Donald Trump, citing government corruption and violation of human rights. Angry protestors believed that Trump was overstepping his authority as president and entering the territory of a king, giving the cause its name: No Kings.
Together with a group of fellow staff members, I was able to attend the San Francisco gathering. We photographed, interviewed, and collected audio samples for this multimedia package. With this package, we really wanted to root out the cause for the protests, and hoped to give our readers the chance to experience the moment, even if they were unable to attend themselves.
Daylight saving time debate springs forward
Daylight saving time dates back to 1918, with the institution of "war time." Initially designed to conserve energy, the practice now effectively does the opposite, with studies finding increased electricity consumption due to daylight time.
The question of whether or not the system is still beneficial is not a new one, but it is one that remains to be answered. With this article, I wanted to explore the actual science and history behind daylight saving time, because everyone's heard of it but no one knows the full story.

Belmont's Hygiene Drive brings the community together
Belmont's Hygiene Drive was hosted by the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) and provided the community with a way to help those in need. Drop-off boxes were placed at various locations around Belmont, where people could donate products such as toothpaste and soap.
In this article, I wanted to dive into the process and purpose of this drive. Events such as this are crucial to helping members of the community who are in need, so I wanted to spotlight the importance of pitching in when you can.
Los Angeles fires leave behind a trail of destruction
The Los Angeles fires of 2025 burned almost 60,000 acres of land, leaving a lasting impact on the people and environment in the area. Due to strong winds and other factors making LA extremely susceptible to wildfires, teams from outside fire stations have been sent to help, including from San Mateo County.
In this article, I look into potential causes for the fires and how climate change may contribute to natural disasters such as these. This topic was really interesting to me because I hadn't really connected natural disasters to climate change before, and continuing to ignore it may lead to more severe weather events such as these.

Holiday Village Week decks the halls with spirit
At Carlmont, the Assembled Student Body (ASB) puts on a spirit week right before finals to spread holiday spirit and help students de-stress. In addition to encouraging students to dress up each day, ASB also hosted fun events in the quad, such as pictures with Santa.
This article is about the planning that goes into a spirit week such as this, from coming up with themes to actually executing them. Additionally, I look into how staff and students view the festivities.
Carlmont closes on Veterans Day to honor military service
Students and staff at Carlmont had Monday, Nov. 11, off in observance of Veterans Day, joining others across the country in honoring the holiday. Originally called "Armistice Day," the holiday was meant to celebrate the end of World War I.
In this article, I wanted to explore the importance of the holiday in a school setting, especially because Carlmont has many former military staff members. Teachers and staff talk about the background and importance of this holiday, as it is not just a day off.

From Gru to you: Preparing for the ‘Despicable Me’-themed homecoming assembly
Carlmont's homecoming assembly took months of preparation and planning from everyone involved. ASB coordinated the minion-theme, while cheer, dance, and other groups choreographed and rehearsed their routines.
I always love watching assemblies, especially for homecoming, so I was really excited to work on this article. It gives a behind-the-scenes view of the assmembly planning process, as well as the goal that ASB had in mind for it.
